Zara’s Journey Inspiration for The Women’s Wellness Circle
Hello, my name is Zara Goodhand, I am originally from the UK and have lived in NZ for nearly 12 years. I feel blessed to live in such a beautiful country, with its unique natural environment and friendly people.
My wellness journey started over a year ago when I found out that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, better known as PCOS. It is a condition caused by fluid filled cysts inside a woman’s ovaries which can cause hormonal imbalances and health complications. It was quite a shock to hear this, but at the same time, I also found closure because I knew I had a hormonal imbalance since puberty, I just wasn’t sure what exactly was the cause. Upon hearing the news, I was told to take the contraceptive pill (to balance my hormones), eat healthily, exercise, and carry on as normal, because this is a common female condition and not to worry about it. Also, there is no cure, so when my husband and I want to conceive, I should go back to the doctor to try medication to help me conceive.
This information didn’t sit well with me – why is this the normal process for women with PCOS? It shouldn’t be, and I thought to myself, ‘Why should I take the contraceptive pill when I have a track record of health complications from using the pill. This is why I’m not taking any form of contraceptive because my body rejects it. I would just be absorbing synthetic hormones to “balance” my hormones. They are already out of balance as it is.’ It just didn’t make sense to me. So, through my own research, I came across a woman who is treating her PCOS naturally, and has brought balance back into her body and lifestyle. This truly inspired me, opened a new door in my life, and is leading me on a journey I’m incredibly excited about, a healing journey through natural health practices & nutrition.
So, this brings me to now. I have always been a “foodie” at heart, and have a passion for nutritious food. Having PCOS is a mixed blessing, as it pushed me in the right direction, so now I can take charge of my health and my life. Even though I have this condition, I haven’t felt as healthy as I am now for a long time. I’m a believer in ‘you are what you eat’, and I have seen the benefits of how changing your diet can change your life. This has led me to Wellpark College, where I am studying a Diploma in Nutrition to become a Nutritionist. My goal is to not only bring balance and harmony back into my life, but to be able to help other women bring balance and harmony into their lives too.
I’m honoured and excited to be a part of The Women’s Wellness Circle. Amanda Goodhand is an amazing woman, she has brought a community of wonderful women together so we can all learn something from one another, support each other, and have a better understanding of what natural therapies have to offer us, through her events. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of nutrition with you all and discussing how food can really benefit your body as a whole.
